About the treatment

A gap between the teeth can develop for several reasons. It may occur naturally as the primary teeth are replaced by permanent teeth, but genetics can also play a role. For example, the size of your teeth and the shape of your jaw may not be perfectly matched, which can leave extra space between the teeth.

A diastema can also be caused by certain oral habits, such as repeatedly pushing your tongue forward when swallowing.

The most suitable treatment depends on the cause and size of the gap. Your dentist will discuss the available options with you and prepare a personalised treatment plan.

In many cases, the space can be reduced using tooth-coloured composite material. This makes your teeth appear slightly wider and helps create a more balanced, natural-looking result.

For an accurate cost estimate for closing your diastema, you can schedule a cosmetic consultation with your dentist. After discussing your wishes and the available treatment options with you, your dentist will provide you with a personalised cost estimate.

Treatment fees must be paid at the reception desk immediately after your appointment, preferably by debit card or, if necessary, in cash. This overview is intended as a general indication only. As every patient requires an individual treatment plan, the final costs may vary from person to person.

Our fees are based on the Performance and Tariff Decision for Dental Care issued by the Dutch Healthcare Authority (Nederlandse Zorgautoriteit, NZa), valid from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2026. For more information about dental costs and reimbursements, please visit allesoverhetgebit.nl.

No. In most cases, a diastema is harmless and does not need to be treated. Treatment may only be recommended if the gap is linked to an underlying dental or gum problem. Otherwise, closing the gap is usually a cosmetic choice.

Usually not. A diastema is generally harmless. If the gap is very large or several teeth are widely spaced, it may sometimes make the gums more difficult to keep healthy. In some cases, a larger gap can also slightly affect speech, for example by causing a lisp.
