There are several possible causes of tooth sensitivity to hot and/or cold. The most common cause is exposed roots of the tooth, which is generally harmless and very common. Receding gums can expose the underlying dentine, which can cause sensitivity, particularly to cold drinks.
Another possibility is that the nerve inside a tooth has become irritated or inflamed. This can make the tooth particularly sensitive to hot and/or cold. In some cases, a root canal treatment may be necessary.
If you have any concerns, we recommend contacting TANDZORG.NL for advice or an examination.
Although a broken tooth or molar does not always cause pain, it is important to have it assessed by one of our dentists as soon as possible. During a consultation, we can determine the most appropriate treatment for your situation.
To properly assess the situation, it is important to schedule an appointment on the next working day. We can then determine what is needed to repair the crown or the filling. Whenever possible, we will repair the crown during the same appointment. The same applies to minor repairs to teeth and/or fillings. In some cases, more time may be required for the treatment. If so, we will schedule a follow-up appointment with you.
After a tooth has been extracted, it is normal for the wound to bleed slightly during the first 24 hours. Your saliva may appear pink or red as a result. Although this can look alarming, minor post-extraction bleeding is usually not dangerous. To allow the blood clot to form properly, do not rinse your mouth during the first 24 hours. Rinsing or spitting can disturb the clot and cause the wound to bleed again. Avoid touching the wound with your tongue or fingers. If the wound is actively bleeding, place a clean, slightly damp gauze or cloth over the extraction site and bite down firmly for about 20–30 minutes without removing or checking it. Painkillers containing aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) may increase the risk of bleeding. Smoking, vaping and alcohol can also interfere with healing and increase the risk of complications.
If the bleeding remains heavy or does not stop after applying firm pressure, contact us.
After a tooth has been extracted, swelling may occur for several days. This is more common after the surgical removal of wisdom teeth by a dental surgeon. The swelling usually subsides on its own.
If you experience any other symptoms in addition to the swelling, such as fever, pain, difficulty opening your mouth, or difficulty swallowing or breathing, we recommend contacting TANDZORG.NL. We are also available outside our regular opening hours for advice and consultation.
When your denture is broken, please contact us so that we can discuss the available options with you.
