A dental crown is a custom-made porcelain restoration that fits over a prepared tooth to restore its shape, strength and function.
General information
A tooth may need to be restored with a dental crown due to wear, damage or tooth decay. A dental crown restores the original shape and function of the tooth and can also be used to protect a weakened tooth and reduce the risk of fracture.
Each dental crown is custom-made to match the shape and colour of your surrounding teeth. The treatment is carried out in stages and usually requires two visits to your dentist, as the dental crown is made in our dental laboratory, TANDZORGLAB, rather than directly in your mouth.
During the first appointment, the tooth is carefully prepared by removing a small amount of tooth structure to create sufficient space for the dental crown. Local anaesthetic can be used if required.
A technician from TANDZORGLAB will take clinical photographs to record the position and shade of the tooth. Your dentist will also take an impression of the prepared tooth using an impression tray and a soft, rubber-like material.
The impression is used to create a plaster model of your teeth. Using this model and modern dental laboratory techniques, our porcelain technician John will carefully shape and create your custom-made dental crown. The dental crown is then finished and polished to achieve a natural appearance.
As the dental crown cannot be completed on the same day, your dentist will fit a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth and keep you comfortable while the final dental crown is being made. Avoid biting on hard or sticky foods with the temporary crown, as it is not designed to withstand heavy forces. Please contact us if the temporary crown becomes loose or breaks.
Once your dental crown is ready, your dentist will carefully check its fit, shape and appearance. The dental crown is then securely cemented onto the prepared tooth using dental cement.
Fees
The fee for a dental crown typically ranges from €800 to €900. Your dentist will provide you with a personalised cost estimate based on your individual dental situation and treatment needs.
Treatment fees must be paid at the reception desk immediately after your appointment, preferably by debit card or, if necessary, in cash. This overview is intended as a general indication only. As every patient requires an individual treatment plan, the final costs may vary from person to person.
Our fees are based on the Performance and Tariff Decision for Dental Care issued by the Dutch Healthcare Authority (Nederlandse Zorgautoriteit, NZa), valid from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2026. For more information about dental costs and reimbursements, please visit allesoverhetgebit.nl.
