General information

About the treatment

Whenever possible and appropriate, TANDZORG.NL will first aim to preserve and restore your natural teeth.

A tooth may need to be extracted in situations such as:

  • A wisdom tooth that has little function, is difficult to keep clean or is causing problems for the tooth in front of it;
  • Advanced gum disease (periodontitis), where the gums and supporting jawbone have been significantly affected;
  • Severe tooth decay.

If a tooth needs to be removed, it may be possible to replace it with a dental bridge, partial denture or dental implant.

If you have an appointment for a tooth extraction, we recommend eating as normal beforehand unless you have been given different instructions.

Before the extraction, local anaesthetic will be given. Once the area is fully numb, the dentist will gently loosen the tooth using special instruments. The tooth is then carefully removed. During the procedure, you may feel some pressure or movement and may hear some cracking sounds, but you should not feel pain.

If you take any medication, continue taking it as prescribed unless your dentist has advised otherwise. Please inform your dentist well in advance if you take anticoagulant medication or other blood-thinning medicines, as additional precautions may be necessary. It is also helpful to bring an up-to-date list of the medicines you use.

In some cases, the extraction site may be closed with stitches, usually dissolvable sutures. A sterile gauze pad will then be placed over the area, and you will be asked to bite down firmly on it for approximately 30 minutes.

The local anaesthetic usually wears off within 2 to 4 hours. We recommend waiting until the local anaesthetic has completely worn off before eating. While your mouth is still numb, swallowing may feel more difficult and there is a greater risk of accidentally biting your tongue or burning your mouth with hot food or drinks.

If a gauze pad has been placed over the extraction site, you may remove it after approximately 30 minutes. You may notice an unpleasant taste in your mouth afterwards. If necessary, you may rinse your mouth gently. Avoid vigorous rinsing during the first 24 hours, as this can dislodge the blood clot at the extraction site and cause bleeding to start again.

If the extraction site has been stitched, dissolvable sutures are usually used. These generally dissolve on their own within approximately three weeks. If non-dissolvable sutures have been used, your dentist will let you know and arrange an appointment to remove them.

After a tooth extraction, we recommend the following:

  • Do not touch or disturb the extraction site with your tongue, fingers or any other object.
  • Avoid vigorous rinsing during the first 24 hours, as this may dislodge the blood clot and cause renewed bleeding from the extraction site.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during the first week, as this may increase swelling.
  • Avoid alcohol for the first three days and refrain from smoking, as smoking can delay healing.
  • Gently clean around the extraction site with a soft toothbrush. These are available from our reception desk.

Please contact us if you experience any of the following:

  • Heavy or persistent bleeding.
  • Increasing or persistent swelling and pain after three days.
  • Difficulty swallowing or a persistent unpleasant taste in your mouth.
  • A fever above 38°C.
  • Any concerns or questions about your recovery.
