The Genius laser is an Nd:YAG laser that uses laser energy at a wavelength of 1064 nanometres. In periodontal treatments, the laser energy is delivered through a thin optical fibre, allowing the dental hygienist to work precisely in and around the periodontal pockets.

The laser energy is absorbed by certain tissues and pigments, particularly blood pigments. This can help to reduce bacteria and inflamed tissue in the periodontal pocket. The laser is also used in combination with conventional periodontal treatment to clean the root surfaces and support the treatment of periodontal disease.

The Genius laser has spray cooling, which helps control the temperature during treatment and makes the procedure more comfortable.
